What is 42Topics?

Short Answer:

42topics finds stories which YOU would like to read, and refuses the belief that social news sites should be democratic.

Longer Answer:

There are many social news sites, Digg, and reddit jump to the mind, so why another one? To answer this question let’s travel back to 1968, when Garrett Hardin wrote The Tragedy of the Commons. This argues that when a large group has access to a common resource, then the resources are overused to point of leaving them barren.

In a social news site, the Front page is the Common, the shared resource which determines which stories everyone will read.

Yet, everyone’s interests are different. What you would like to read can be, and would be totaly different from what would I like to read. And yet, there is only one front page. So I want to promote stories which I would like to read, and you want to promote stories which you would like to read. This is the Tragedy.

At 42topics we take a totaly different apprach to finding stories for you. 42topics does not try to be a democratic social news site. The one person, one vote works great in offline world, but it breaks when any one can regsiter and determine what you should get to read.

42topics has only one goal, to find stories which YOU will like to read. Notice that we never said that we want to find the top, the most liked stories. Of course, on 42topics, you can submit, like and dislike stories. And that is how we find stories which you will like. At 42topics, you can create a topic, tag stories, like, dislike, submit stories, but the real job of 42topics is finding that story which you will love to read now. Everything else is just bookeeping. AT 42topics.com,
You are the topic.
